The 94th annual Kansas Junior Livestock Show (KJLS) brought 4-H and FFA exhibitors from across Kansas to Hutchinson October 2-4, with grand and supreme champions named throughout the weekend in market and breeding divisions for all four species–cattle, swine, sheep and goats.
In the market steer show, Brecken Bergkamp from Reno County led his 1,433 lb. Charolais steer to grand champion honors. Dax Seibert of Pawnee County exhibited the reserve champion steer, a 1,329 lb. crossbred.
Stetson Moubry of Russell County owned the supreme champion breeding heifer, a Red Angus. Aubree McCurry from Reno County claimed reserve supreme honors with her Angus heifer. Moubry’s heifer also was named supreme champion in the bred-and-owned division, while Josie Beltz from McPherson County led the reserve supreme, a Hereford heifer.
Kate Heikes from Johnson County exhibited the grand champion market hog, a 291 lb. dark crossbred. The reserve grand champion, a 290 lb. Duroc, was shown by Kelltyn Grasser of Rice County.
The supreme breeding gilt came from the commercial division and was guided by Creo Spears from Dickinson County. Gentry Ward of Miami County exhibited the reserve supreme breeding gilt. In the bred-and-owned division, Anah Higbie from Franklin County owned the supreme champion gilt, a Berkshire. Kannon Reiss of Wallace County showed the reserve supreme, a Spot.
Cole Flower of Rooks County led the grand champion market lamb, a 148 lb. blackface. Quinlyn Yoho from Woodson County exhibited the reserve grand, a 150 lb. blackface lamb.
The supreme breeding ewe, a Shropshire, was shown by Brecken Nelson of Greeley County. Rylee Thomas from Marion County led the reserve supreme from the commercial division. Nelson’s ewe also topped the bred-and-owned division, with Colyer Williams of Reno County owning the reserve supreme bred-and-owned, a Hampshire.
Ella Hoeltzel of Riley County exhibited the 90 lb. grand champion market goat, with Kodi McComb from Pratt County leading the 82 lb. reserve champion.
Avery Franklin of Reno County owned the supreme champion commercial doe, while Sadie Eggers from Woodson County showed the reserve supreme.
Innovative Livestock Services was the exclusive sponsor of the beef show, while Cargill underwrote the sheep and goat shows. Additional sponsors included Cavender’s, Elite Show Supply, Farm Credit Associations of Kansas, Huvepharma, the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Kansas Farm Bureau and Farm Bureau Financial Services, KLA, Kansas State University, Trans Ova and Weaver Livestock.
