A steer fed at Triangle H of Garden City and owned by Mayer Legacy LLC won the Earl C. Brookover Memorial Award at the Beef Empire Days fed cattle show. The 1,640 lb. entry placed second in the live show and 13th in the carcass contest for the best combined finish. The steer graded low Prime, was a Yield Grade (YG) 3.1, had a 16.89 square inch ribeye and carried .60” of backfat.
Hy-Plains Feedyard at Montezuma fed the reserve champion steer owned by JO Cattle Co. of Holcomb. The 1,600 lb. steer placed eighth in the live show, ninth in the carcass contest, graded low Prime, was a YG 2.6, had a 16.02 square inch ribeye and .36” of backfat.
Beef Belt LLC of Scott City fed the entry chosen as the champion steer carcass, which was owned by W6 Cattle near Collyer. The 1,510 lb. steer graded Prime, was a YG 2.8, had a 17.39 square inch ribeye and carried .56” of backfat.
The grand champion heifer also was fed at Beef Belt LLC by W6 Cattle. The heifer weighed 1,480 lbs., was 15th in the live show and first in the carcass contest. The animal graded high Prime, was a YG 1.9, had an 18.51 square inch ribeye and carried .46” of backfat.
Brookover Feedyard of Garden City fed the reserve champion heifer owned by Brookover Land Enterprises. The 1,610 lb. entry placed 12th live and fourth in the carcass contest with a Prime quality grade and a YG 3.6. The heifer had a 16.36 square inch ribeye and .74” of backfat.
A total of 124 steers and 69 heifers from feedyards across the High Plains competed in the show.
