FSA Announces New Flexibility For CRP Winter Grazing

November 18, 2024

According to the Kansas Farm Service Agency (FSA), the state recently was granted a waiver that would allow for more flexibility to graze Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres from November 1 to March 1. Prior to this waiver, grazing CRP was prohibited during this time frame due to a policy adopted in 2020.

The waiver will allow CRP to be grazed from November to March on a case-by-case basis as approved by the FSA state executive director. The Natural Resources Conservation Service, the technical service provider for CRP, will need to certify that grazing during this time frame will not have any long-term negative impacts on the grass before a waiver can be granted. The number of grazing days will be limited under existing policy and minimum cover requirements still will apply.

Producers interested in receiving the waiver must apply at their local FSA office for the nonemergency grazing between November 1 and March 1.
