Meats, Arndt Top Beef Fest Contests

Steers owned by Mike and LeAnna Meats from LeRoy and heifers owned by Michael and Steven Arndt of Emporia won the overall gain contest as part of the 2019 Flint Hills Beef Fest feedlot and carcass awards. The Meats’ steers gained 3.27 lbs. per day from the time they went on grass in April 2019 until harvest last month, while the Arndts’ heifers gained 3.08 lbs.

Taking first place in the steer feedlot contest were cattle gaining 6.21 lbs. on feed and owned by Brody and Levi Lutz from Madison. In second place were steers entered by Brandon Litch of Melvern. The steer carcass contest was won by entries from Donnie Swift and Brad Talkington of Matfield Green, with second place awarded to cattle owned by Dennis and Connie Darbyshire from Hartford.

In the heifer division, the winning pen from Lee and Marilyn Kidd of Fredonia gained 4.73 lbs. per day in the feedlot contest, with John and Heather Sigle from Wilsey owning the cattle that finished second. Entries from Donnie Swift and Brad Talkington won the heifer carcass contest, with Kenneth and Shirley Thomas of Hartford owning the second-place pen.
