Gov. Kelly Eases Motor Carrier Regulations To Assist In Disaster Relief

March 28, 2019

Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly issued an executive order last week temporarily exempting commercial motor carriers and operators from some regulations to expedite disaster recovery efforts in areas affected by the recent blizzard and flooding. For vehicles involved in providing direct assistance, the governor’s order temporarily suspends licensing, certification and permitting rules and regulations required by the Kansas Corporation Commission. It also provides an exemption from registration and fuel tax permits enforced by the Kansas Department of Revenue.

Participating motor vehicles hauling hay will be allowed to carry loads up to 12’ in width and 14’ 6” in height. Motor carriers still must obtain over-size permits as required by the Kansas Department of Transportation, but the fees associated with those permits are temporarily waived under the executive order.
