NCBA Encouraged By USDA Involvement In Fake Meat Public Meeting

September 17, 2018

The USDA Food Safety Inspection Service and Food and Drug Administration have announced a joint public meeting to discuss the potential hazards, regulatory oversight considerations and labeling of cell-cultured food products derived from livestock and poultry tissue. NCBA will attend the October 23-24 meeting in Washington, D.C. and has submitted a request to offer public comment.

NCBA Director of Government Affairs Danielle Beck said she is encouraged by USDA’s involvement in the debate over which agency will regulate lab-grown fake meat. She said USDA’s stringent food safety inspection process and robust labeling protections make it the best choice for leading the regulatory oversight process of these new products.
