Input Needed During Council And Committee Meetings At Convention

KLA members are encouraged to attend the convention, November 30 to December 2 in Wichita, to provide input on policy issues. Members will have an opportunity to discuss and vote on association policy as it works its way through standing committee and council meetings.  

The KLA Stockgrowers Council agenda includes a state legislative update from KLA Vice President of Legal & Government Affairs Aaron Popelka. Tanner Beymer, NCBA senior director of government affairs, will review election results and preview what’s ahead for Congress. There also will be a presentation on livestock risk protection insurance from Joe Kovanda with Compass Ag Solutions.    

During the Cattle Feeders Council meeting, Kansas State University agricultural economist Ted Schroeder will discuss mandatory price reporting. KLA Environmental Services Compliance Consultant Katlynn Bourne will give an overview of the regulatory app available to members. Beymer and Kovanda also will speak. 

Dairy Council members will hear from Ryan Vincent and Alissa Ice, both with the Kansas Housing Authority, on housing options for dairy employees. A presentation also will be given by on hiring options to help with labor shortages. Bourne will join the meeting to give an overview of the KLA regulatory app.  

Members of the KLA Animal Health & ID Committee will get an update on disease control in the state from Kansas Animal Health Commissioner Justin Smith. In addition, Committee Chair Mary Ann Kniebel will give a report on the NCBA Traceability Working Group.  

The Natural Resources Committee agenda will include a review of HB 2686, the mega water bill introduced in the last legislative session. The Kansas Farm Service Agency will discuss grazing opportunities available through the conservation reserve program. Committee member Tim Connell will give a presentation on the Kansans for Conservation Coalition.  

The KLA Tax Committee will hear a report from attorneys Lucky DeFries and Trevor Wohlford on how expiring tax cuts may impact agricultural business and retirement planning. KLA Associate Counsel Jackie Garagiola will give a tax policy update as well.   

Resolutions advancing through committees and councils will require final approval by the general membership at the end of convention. The finalized policy will guide KLA officers and staff in 2023.
