A heifer fed at Irsik & Doll Feed Yard by Heritage Cattle, both of Garden City, won the Earl C. Brookover Memorial Award at the Beef Empire Days fed cattle show. The 1,404 lb. Angus cross heifer placed first among live heifers and first in the heifer carcass contest for the best combined finish in the show. Data showed the heifer hung an 872 lb. carcass, had a 15.2 square inch ribeye with .57” of fat cover, graded low Prime and was a Yield Grade 2.81.
The grand champion steer was a 1,414 lb. entry fed at HRC Feedyards of Scott City by Schurrtop Angus & Charolais of Nebraska. This steer placed sixth live and fourth in the carcass contest. The entry hung a 907 lb. carcass, had a 15.8 square inch ribeye with .42” of backfat, graded high Choice and was a Yield Grade 2.32.
Beef Belt LLC of Scott City fed the steer chosen as the grand champion carcass. The 1,458 lb. steer, owned by W6 Cattle of Nebraska, hung a 922 lb. carcass, had a 15.3 square inch ribeye with .45” of fat cover, graded Prime and was a Yield Grade 2.57.
